I like to go cold water swimming in a local lake which still contains carp from its previous use as a fishing spot. They all gather in one particular area to be fed and I’ve found that I simply love swimming up to them and bobbing about whilst they swim around me and occasionally bump into me. Got me thinking about fish and carp in particular and I thought there couldn’t possibly be any magical or spiritual significance associated with carp?. Turns out I was wrong! For example, whilst young carp swim in schools for safety and survival, the larger carp are often more solitary symbolising the ability to break away from the crowd and follow your own path. In Vietnam, people take a captive carp and set it free under the belief that the carp will turn into a dragon and be filled with ancient power and wisdom. And finally, a carp with golden colouring (like the carp I swim with) symbolises wealth and contentment. How brilliant is that!
